What is alloy wheel refurbishment?

Alloy wheel refurbishment is the process of repairing, restoring, and repainting alloy wheels and bringing them back to their original condition. This can involve a variety of tasks, such as removing tyres, valves, and sensors, acid dipping the wheels to remove the old paint, fixing curb rashes, repairing or welding cracks, straightening bent wheels, and powder coating the wheels to preserve the alloy from corroding and giving it an aesthetically pleasing finish.

Why should I refurbish my alloy wheels?

There are several reasons why you should refurbish your alloy wheels. Refurbished alloy wheels can improve the appearance of your car, increase its value, and make it safer to drive.

Quality alloy wheel refurbishment, done by qualified workshops will identify any safety-related issues with your wheels which could save you money and prevent accidents. If you experience vibrations when driving, this could be the symptom of a buckled wheel. Competent Alloy Wheel Refurbishing workshops will be able to fix such issues saving you £,£££.££

What Causes Wheels to Buckle?

Buckled wheels are a common problem for car owners, and they can be caused by a variety of factors. Some of the most common causes of buckled wheels include:

  • Hitting potholes or curbs: This is the most common cause of buckled wheels. When you hit a pothole or curb, the impact can bend the wheel out of shape.
  • Driving over rough terrain: Driving over rough terrain, such as gravel roads or uneven pavement, can also cause your wheels to buckle.
  • Underinflated tires: Underinflated tires can make your wheels more susceptible to buckling.
  • Overloading your vehicle: Overloading your vehicle can put too much stress on your wheels, which can cause them to buckle.
  • Manufacturing defects: Although rare, manufacturing defects can also cause wheels to buckle.
  • The use of Run Flat Tyres with Low Profile: Run-flat tires are designed to allow you to continue driving for a short distance even after a puncture. This is because they have a reinforced sidewall that supports the weight of the car. However, run-flat tires are also more susceptible to wheel buckles and cracks than conventional tires.

There are a few reasons for this: Run-flat tires are stiffer than conventional tires. This is because they need to be able to support the weight of the car even after a puncture. However, this also means that they are less forgiving of impacts from potholes and curbs.

Run-flat tires have a lower profile than conventional tires. This means that there is less space between the tire and the wheel. This makes the wheel more vulnerable to damage from impacts.

If you live in North West London, UK, you are probably aware of the poor condition of some of the roads in the area. This can make your wheels even more susceptible to damage from potholes and curbs.

If you are considering using run-flat tires, it is important to be aware of the increased risk of wheel buckles and cracks. You should also have your wheels inspected regularly by a qualified alloy wheel repair specialist. The powder coating process for wheels involves the following steps:

  • Preparation: The wheels are thoroughly cleaned and stripped of any existing paint or finish. This is done to ensure that the powder coating will adhere properly. All structural repairs such as welding and or straightening are also addressed at this stage.
  • Pre-heating: The wheels are pre-heated in an oven to remove any moisture or contaminants.
  • Powder coating: The powder is applied to the wheels using a specialized spray gun. The powder is electrostatically charged, which causes it to stick to the wheels.

This reveals the underlying metal, which gives the wheel a very high shine.

Diamond cutting can then be lacquered using tints in a variety of different colours such as red, bronze, yellow, rainbow, etc. All the above Alloy Wheel Diamond Cutting Services are offered by us at JR Alloy Wheel Repair.

What is Caliper Painting?

Caliper painting is a process that is used to change the colour of your brake calipers. It is a very popular way to customize the look of your car and make it stand out whilst protecting its components for many years to come. Caliper painting can be done using a variety of different methods, including spray painting, brush painting, and powder coating. The best method for you will depend on your budget and the desired finished product

Here are some tips for painting your brake calipers:

  • Choose a high-quality caliper paint that is specifically formulated for brake calipers. At JR Alloy Wheel Repairs we only use 2K Heat Resistant Paint hat is specifically formulated to withstand very high temperatures that your calipers could reach.
  • Ensure the calipers are fully prepped by cleaning them thoroughly and removing any rust or corrosion as well as any oils and contaminants.
  • Apply the paint in thin coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
  • Ensure the calipers are clear coated to protect the paint and give it a high shine.

How Long Does It Take to Paint My Calipers?

The total time it takes to paint your calipers will vary depending on a few factors, including the condition of the calipers, the painting technique used, and the number of coats applied. However, you can expect the entire process to take anywhere from 4 to 10 hours.

Here is a general breakdown of the steps involved in painting calipers:

  • Preparation: This is the most important step, as it will ensure that the paint adheres properly to the calipers. Before anything else, we start by cleaning the calipers thoroughly with a degreaser and a brush. Once clean, we sand the calipers lightly with fine-grit sandpaper to create a smooth surface. Finally, we’ll wipe the calipers down with a clean, lint-free cloth to remove any dust and debris.
  • Painting: Once we have prepped the calipers, we begin the painting process. By using a high-quality caliper paint that is designed to withstand very high temperatures and harsh conditions that brake calipers are subjected to, we apply thin paint layers, even coats, and allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
  • Curing: Once the paint has been applied, we allow the calipers to cure before applying your choice of decals (BMW, M, Mercedes–Benz, AMG, Audi, S Line, etc). This will give your calipers an amazing look and to ensure durability, we apply a coat of lacquer to seal everything. The calipers will fully harden and become resistant to heat and wear in no time.

What is the Warranty for Caliper Painting?

The warranty for caliper painting will generally depend on the shop or individual that performs the work. However, most warranties will cover the paint for a period of 6 to 12 months. It is important to note that the warranty will typically not cover damage caused by factors beyond the control of the shop or individual, such as road debris, chemical spills, excessive heat, or situations such as a wheel dropped onto the caliper.

What is Alloy Wheel Welding?

Alloy wheel welding is a process used to repair cracks and other damage in alloy wheels. The process involves heating the damaged area of the wheel to a high temperature and then filling the crack with molten metal. Once the metal has cooled, it is ground and sanded to create a smooth finish. Alloy wheel welding is a highly skilled process that should only be performed by a qualified professional.

Is it better to powder coat or paint rims?

Whether it is better to powder coat or paint rims depends on your individual needs and preferences. Both methods have their own advantages and disadvantages.

  • Powder coating is a more durable and long-lasting finish than painting. It is also more resistant to chipping, scratching, and corrosion. However, powder coating can be more expensive than painting, and it is not as easy to repair if it is damaged.
  • Painting is a less expensive and more versatile option than powder coating. It is also easier to repair if it is damaged. However, painted rims are not as durable or long-lasting as powder-coated rims.
